Experiencing a Similar GPU Fault?

No display, no power, crashing, overheating or other graphics card issues?

Fox Tech Repairs provides nationwide UK mail-in diagnostics and component-level graphics card repair, with the fault investigated before any repair work is carried out.

The original GPU detection fault was successfully resolved.

Component-level investigation identified an IC exhibiting severe abnormal heating. Following replacement of the affected component, the RTX 2080 SUPER was once again correctly detected and able to operate normally.

The graphics card subsequently completed sustained load testing with a GPU temperature of approximately 69°C and a hotspot temperature of approximately 85°C, with normal fan operation throughout testing.

The repair allowed the original graphics card to be returned to working condition without replacing the entire device.

Original fault: GPU not detected by motherboard
Fault type: Component-level PCB fault
Repair: Faulty IC replacement
Testing: Detection, display, drivers and sustained GPU load
Outcome: Successfully repaired and tested

6. The Result

4. The Repair

Once the suspected faulty component had been identified, the IC was carefully removed from the graphics card PCB.

The surrounding pads and board area were inspected and prepared before a replacement component was installed.

Following the component-level repair, the area was checked under magnification to verify soldering quality and ensure there were no bridges or damage to the surrounding circuitry.

Electrical checks were then repeated before the graphics card was powered again.

Following the repair, the RTX 2080 SUPER was once again correctly recognised by the test system and could proceed into normal operation.

Restoring detection was only the first part of confirming a successful repair.

The RTX 2080 SUPER was installed in a working test system and checked to confirm that the GPU was correctly detected and could operate normally within Windows.

The graphics card was then subjected to FurMark 2 load testing while temperatures, fan operation and stability were monitored.

Under full load, testing recorded approximately:

GPU temperature — 69°C
GPU hotspot — 85°C

The card remained operational under sustained load without reproducing the original fault.

Fan behaviour was also checked. The fans operated during startup, stopped when the card was cool and idle, and activated again when GPU load increased. This was consistent with the card's normal fan-stop behaviour rather than indicating another fault.

Post-repair checks

  • ✓ GPU correctly detected by the test system

  • ✓ Display output operating correctly

  • ✓ Drivers operating correctly

  • ✓ FurMark 2 load testing completed

  • ✓ Stable operation under GPU load

  • ✓ Fan operation verified

  • ✓ GPU temperature monitored

  • ✓ Hotspot temperature monitored

  • ✓ Repaired area inspected under magnification

  • ✓ Final functional testing completed

5. Testing & Verification

Initial electrical checks and a visual inspection of the PCB were carried out before the card was powered for further testing.

Thermal imaging was then used to look for components displaying abnormal behaviour.

During testing, a small IC on the PCB was found to be becoming extremely hot very quickly, reaching approximately 130°C. This was significantly outside normal operating behaviour and provided a strong indication that the component or the circuitry around it had failed.

Further measurements were carried out around the affected area to confirm the fault before component replacement was attempted.

2. Diagnosis

3. What We Found

Component-level diagnosis isolated the problem to the affected IC and its surrounding circuitry.

The component, identified on the board by its markings during diagnosis, was showing abnormal thermal behaviour and was suspected of preventing the graphics card from completing its normal startup sequence.

This explained why the motherboard was unable to correctly recognise the RTX 2080 SUPER despite the card being physically installed.

Key findings

  • GPU not correctly detected by the motherboard

  • Card unable to complete its normal initialisation

  • Abnormal heat detected during thermal inspection

  • Suspect IC reaching approximately 130°C

  • Fault isolated to a component-level area of the PCB

1. The Problem

This Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER arrived with a fault that prevented the graphics card from being correctly recognised by the computer.

When installed in a test system, the motherboard was unable to properly detect and initialise the GPU, leaving the card unusable.

A fault of this type can originate from several areas of a graphics card, including its power circuitry, firmware, memory or GPU itself. Component-level investigation was therefore required to determine what was preventing the card from starting correctly.
